Hoarding is a mental illness, specifically OCD, where the perceived importance of the hoarded
items far exceeds their true value. In severe cases, houses belonging to such people may
become a fire hazard (due to blocked exits and stacked papers) or a health hazard (due to
hoarded food, garbage or the risk of stacks of items collapsing on the occupants and
blocking egress paths).
To better understand why hoarders choose to keep many useless items, it is necessary to
delve into the psychology behind their hoarding. It's important to note that people with OCD or
Hoarding cannot be cured but instead live in recovery. Sufferers may need medication and/or
therapy for their entire life and will always need to work on their fear and anxiety, as well as
